I think it tastes good. The flavour kind of reminds me of glutinous rice balls, a Chinese snack/dessert, minus the sweet ginger broth that it is sometimes in.
Texture is fine to me. I don't think it's too grainy, like someone might think for the kind of product it is. There is a very slight bit of chew with every drink, akin to a a watery porridge. I sort of enjoy it. I use just a blender bottle to mix the powder with the water. Maybe use a blender for a smoother feel.
I find it filling as well and I don't feel hungry after consuming it. Overall, I'm impressed with Biolent and have already bought 112 meals.
Not gonna lie, how this doesn't smell like vomit after a few hours compared to Soylent is a huge plus. It also mixes better (in my experience) and it's just nice to have a change. However, while the price is where it's at I'll constantly be looking for alternatives. Another Cansdian version called Hol Foods is already cheaper and I'm looking into it.
Perhaps sell a version where the bags don't come with scoops to cut down on price and compete with Soylent and Hol Foods.
The nutritional aspect is killer, but the taste and texture don't work out
Didn't think I would like it because I was with Soylent. Tried and bought two bags and couldn't be happier. Smaller serving sizes and a nice thick and oat-like taste! Great with mint-chocolate protein!
Great product that I feel is comparable to or possibly better than Soylent. It's filling and tasty. Love the nutritional profile as well. I'm surprised at the complaints about texture; I find it smooth and easy to drink on its own. If I want to really trick it out I throw a bit of frozen banana and cinnamon in - and it's dynamite baby!
Came from Soylent, only mildly satisfied with Biolent. First complaint is that it is WAY too sweet (I ordered biolent original), this much sugar can’t be good, and it certainly doesn’t taste good. Second is the grainy texture, even after waiting 3 hours, it doesn’t mix well (I think it’s the chia seeds). I like chia, but I’d consider using another ingredient for a drink.
I take it with me when I head downtown. Great to avoid restaurants or fast food snacks. and sometimes drink it instead of a late night snack. it's satifying!
After Soylent stopped delivering to Canada I sought out other options, and boy am I happy with Biolent. I MUCH prefer it--it leaves me feeling fuller longer and gives me more immediate energy than I expected. Take some experimenting to find the consistency/mix that works right for you, but once you're over that hurdle its fantastic. Wouldn't go back to Soylent now if they started delivering to Canada again; would absolutely recommend Biolent over it.
Got it because Soylent isn't available in Canada anymore. While I miss ordering the bottles, and having to wait three hours is a little annoying, the taste is great, it came quickly and I like the options!
To be brutally honest, the first time I tried Biolent after switching from Soylent I wasn't very impressed. But I discovered that all I had to do was mix the Biolent with more water than I had done before. This improved things considerably. I've been drinking Biolent for breakfast for a month now and I find myself looking forward to tomorow's shake.
The flavor and consistency are good, and the shake is filling on its own if taking a 500 calorie serving or more.
I would strongly recommend using a kitchen scale to divide bags into days and/or meals, as the scoop is not very accurate.
I find Biolent to be a good meal replacement and would buy again.
- good taste
- IMO better ingredients compared to soylent
- easy to make
- Confusing instructions (how many scoops is in a "meal"?)
- 1 shake is 250 calories which is a lot to drink for that few calories. I usually add 1 scoop of whey protein and 1 tbsp of olive oil. This increases the calories to 490 per shake, and increases protein and fat while reducing the ratio of carbs. This has been working well for me.
- tastes fine
- you can control the consistency
- strange portions
- no way to measure the portions
- bits of grain can be off putting
Coming from Soylent, I like that it has a bit of flavour, even though I wasn't turned off by Soylent. The weird thing is that 250 calories is not a meal, and the recommended mix makes it quite watery. Using a 28oz bottle, I like to put about 200mL worth of powder and add about 400mL of water for a thicker texture.
Change the meal size to 500 calories and add a scoop!
Great product which I have been using since January and have been a happy customer. However, I noticed the taste and consistency has changed quite a bit in the last batch. Hope this is not a new formula as it's very seems very watery and does not fill the void.
Biolent is an excellent product. It is very filling, and the taste is somewhat pleasant. Will be purchasing again for sure.
I have given one star for convenience, one star for effectiveness, and one star for price.
I have withheld one star for flavour. The vanilla flavouring is too sweet. Fortunately, this can be partially rectified by adding more water. A "natural" flavour version of this product would be appreciated.
I have also withheld one star because of the choking hazard. I have tried orders of both original Biolent and Biolent Keto. In both cases I have found large pieces and full sunflower seeds in my mix. This is not acceptable for a product which is marketed as a drink. I am a practicing lawyer. I can see a lawsuit in the future of Biolent if they don't start milling their ingredients more thoroughly. I protect myself by running my own shakes through a Breville Boss blender (same class as a Vitamix blender).
I wish I could give Biolent four or five stars. I would rate Biolent better than the alternatives that I have tried, except for the fact that the product appears to be unsafe as a drink. In the meantime, blend or chew it until they get it right or get shut down.
Alright, let me just preface this with the fact that this is my first "Food Alternative" type of product.
I'm a martial artist who trains pretty regularly and doesn't like to take the time to make healthy food at home. What this usually means is I end up eating way too much fast food garbage and my body feels sluggish.
Within no less than 10 minutes of consuming Biolent, I could feel the sluggishness disappear. I felt mobile and energetic. If your body is lacking any nutrients from your normal diet like me, I think it'll make you feel a lot better.
My only complaint is the texture. To somebody who isn't used to this type of "food", it can be incredibly strange feeling to consume it. I'm sure that gets easier with time, but boy was it a strange experience having a slow, thick liquid going down my throat. It didn't taste horrible, but it just tasted too thick to me using the instructions I had. Using more water Than they recommend is what I would recommend.
Overall, very happy to have discovered this product!
Biolent has the ideal nutrient profile for what I am looking for in my diet. The addition of probiotics takes another step out of my food preparation day. I didn't care for the taste in the first meal I had, but as I drank more and more, my taste buds must have adjusted. A few days in and I crave the flavour. I tried it out after the Soylent problems and am definitely sticking around.
I applaud the effort to create a [mostly] natural meal replacement powder. I particularly applaud the Biolent Flex and Biolent Keto additions--two niches dying to be filled. However, what's in your vitamin powder? How natural is that? Brands like Vega proclaim that their vitamins and minerals come entirely from whole-food sources. Where do Biolent vitamins come from? It's impossible to tell which ones come from the natural ingredients, and which ones come from the vitamin mix. I mean, am I just eating oatmeal plus a multivitamin?
After a month of drinking s-lent, they were back ordered so I was forced to look elsewhere. And glad I did, as some of the big brand ingredients are questionable. This stuff tastes way better, and can be drank on its own. I had to mix fruits or cocoa with the other brand, not here. Some people complain about the texture, but it's not bad at all (unless you hate oatmeal. its like oatmeal.) I'm a fan, they use simple, natural ingredients, have adjusted mineral levels to account for bio-availability, and taken steps to remove phytic acid via probiotic fermentation. Looking forward to trying biolent flex, really hope it is as good.
tried first 14 days...re-ordering, 'cause it's worth it. I was warned about poop issues, none have bothered me yet, fingers crossed! Tastes just like watery oatmeal, pretty acceptable actually. Energy levels sustained for longer than a normal meal which makes me very very happy.
I initially tried Soylent as a meal replacement, but their new version of 1.6 powder and 2.0 drinks gave me the shits. So looking for alternatives I came across Biolent (and a few others, but this was the only one to send to Canada). So far it's working really well. I am only using it as a supplement to normal meals, but I feel decent and my bowels are A OK. I think the pro-biotics is a HUGE plus, as the more I read and watch about our gut biome, the more I realize it's probably what is controlling my volatile emotions (AKA I'm much less reactive to negative people and experiences).
My family finds the taste kind of offensive, but I think it's pretty good, but that's probably due to my diet restrictions cutting out a lot of tasty food.
To sum it all up, I think it's pretty awesome, just not quite as filling as Soylent with comparable amounts.
The taste is okay at best, and the texture separates very easily, so i have to always shake it up before I consume it.
I've been using Biolent for about 12 days now to replace about 75 percent of my daily calories, 100 percent on some days. I feel good and have more energy than before. My only concerns are that I often feel tired in the morning and have a hard time waking up when I eat it for breakfast, and I have uncomfortable and sometimes painful gas from drinking it. I don't know what exactly causes this, maybe I'm just still adjusting to the somewhat radical change in my diet (any advice on this would be appreciated). I am thinking of switching to Biolent flex because my legs seem to be taking extra long to recover after I run and I could probably benefit from some extra protein.
Who knew that eating ice cream for lunch could be a well balanced meal! Biolent's slightly sweet flavor makes decent ice cream too. Mix up your biolent and water, put it in the ice cream maker, churn and eat. Hint: if you freeze it after churning it will get too hard, so go for a soft-serve texture right out of the churn instead. I use a 1 quart Donvier ice cream maker, but I am sure other types could work just as easily.
I have been using biolent for a year after switching from "brand S". I like the ingredients and taste in Biolent better. It's not for every meal, but I have it at least once per day. It's also very useful when I am away from home and not near a good resteraunt option, or don't want to spend the time and money to eat out.
My 85 year old father is now also using Biolent. He hates to cook, and this simplifies his meal planning. He also had occasional problems with hypoglycemia that Biolent seems to solve. Dad's a picky eater, but he enjoys the taste of Biolent. So it's not just for athletes!
I've been using Biolent for the past 6 months and it's been working out great! I'm using it as a supplement to my daily diet instead of a meal replacement. I often have trouble meeting my daily calorie needs and Biolent helps to fill in the gaps between my meals. I also have a problem with whey protein powders, so I greatly appreciate the usage of rice protein (please don't ever change this!)
My cons would be that it's pretty grainy due to the whole ingredients. The heavier ingredients also then to settle in the bottom quite quickly and I need to re-shake it up to mix it around again. These are more than tolerable things and for me the pro's greatly outweigh the cons. I've been searching for a supplement like this for a while and I'm very happy to find it and I'm a very satisfied customer!
I'm testing this out as a meal replacement for when I'm really busy with work. Tastes OK, pretty sweet and very much like oatmeal. I picked it up in Toronto at the Pi Squared store on Bloor, easy to find and no hassle. I usually mix three cups of biolent with water and I keep it in my fridge for a few days. Taste fine after a few days, however it does need to be stirred after a few days since the mixture seem to separate after a while.
Decent taste, easy to mix up in my blender bottle. Comes in two big bags which I like. Fast shipping(I'm quite rural).
Lots of good comes in these packages, quick and easy to make, not a significant clean up mess like some competitors.
The only hang up I had was making a batch and leaving it over night. Stick to the guidelines and max out at 2 hours in the fridge. It became very gelatinous and hard to consume otherwise.
- it's now green
- seems to break up better in water; it's drinkable out of a waterbottle now
- tastes less sweet, which I like
- have been consuming biolent about one meal per day for around 2 months. haven't had renal failure or anything yet, will update if that happens.
- current price: around 68 USD. ships in around a week to Chicago.
I've been drinking Biolent on and off for nearly 2 weeks (I'm not going 100%), and I can safely say that I've really been enjoying it!
Pros: It's nice and sweet to satisfy my sweet tooth, and I actually like the grainy/chewy texture. It reminds me of something akin to an oatmeal raisin cookie. (Also, I am a fish HATER, and I definitely did NOT detect any of the fishy taste/smell the reviewer below me, Dean, noticed. Very strange). I definitely look forward to drinking it each day! I also noticed that I feel more energetic on days that I drink Biolent. Shipping was very quick as well - it arrived about a week after ordering.
Cons: It's very runny, which I actually quite like, but I'm listing it as a con because it does not fill me up as well as Soylent did. It also requires being shaken vigorously before each sip, because the chewy bits settle quickly. I definitely do not care for the powdery clumps, but they're easy enough to swallow down.
Suggestion/Request to Biolent: To complete the oatmeal cookie flavour, please consider adding cinnamon and nutmeg to your mix! It's amazingly good! (It's also even better mixed with half a cup of hazelnut coffee and water to desired thickness!)
I am finishing my first week of Biolent as I write this. I ordered Biolent mostly because of the fact that Soylent is expensive now with the exchange rate to CAD being what it is. I like the no-frills bags but the shipping wasn't as swift as expected.
When I received the bags there were little white areas in the bags that I mistook for mold, they were apparently just powered oil and maltodextrin, as someone at Biolent quickly replied when I asked.
The texture is a bit grainy and sandy which honestly I don't mind. I like the smoothness of Soylent better but this is fine too, albeit fairly different. As well, I realize the chia seeds create a gelatinous texture that is quite evident which I can see would turn some customers off but I honestly got used to it and it's fine.
Two more things. I found I didn't stay as satiated on this current formula and needed to eat more throughout the day and/or other meals.
None of the above would prevent me from ordering again, except for the following. Its current iteration contains shellfish and I can definitely taste/smell it and it is really foul. Every time I made Biolent in the Vitamix blender I've had to either add PB2 powder, vanilla protein powder or Progressive Vegessential mix to cover up the taste/smell. I feel like if they could just work on this a bit I would become a more regular customer.
It's a work in progress, I understand recipes are for tweaking, and I hope they do! These products are quite a time saver. I'm afraid Biolent is only a viable alternative for me right now if the Canadian dollar is this low and if I have extra stuff on hand to cover up the shellfish taste. If not, I'd have to stick to the competition unfortunately, because being in Canada I'd rather opt for a Canadian alternative.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Reminiscent of oatmeal cookie batter. Lightly sweet and a bit gritty (flax seeds) with some clumps (can probably blend better). Some people might not like this but I enjoy the bit of chewing. Not chalky. Delicious with just water.
POSITIVE RESULTS: Palate reset. Less junk food cravings. More veggie & healthy food cravings. Healthy appetite returned (previously skipping meals, forgetting to eat). Noticeably more mentally alert with less anxiety. Consistent energy with no crashes, general sense of well-being.
UNDESIRABLE SYMPTOMS: Not much. Slight carb cravings. 1 slice of whole grain toast kept it at bay. No issues with gas, headaches, or other side effects known to Soylent products.
NOTES: Neon yellow urine. Yup, lots of vitamins in Biolent!
CONCLUSION: Great experience! Will definitely continue.
